VICTORIA – Staff at the Fairmont Empress hotel are used to hosting royalty, but today a queen of a different kind checked in for an extended stay at the historic hotel. The buzz about her arrival was almost deafening, literally, as a queen honey bee and her entourage of 400-thousand workers relocated to the Centennial garden. John Gibeau brought the Italian and Cariolan bees to the Empress. He supplies bees and honey to other Fairmont hotels on the lower mainland. The Empress bees are from Surrey and they’ll spend the summer here, but they won’t be on vacation. “This yard of 10 colonies will produce about five to six hundred kilos of honey,” says Gibeau. Using home-grown products is a priority for the Empress as it moves towards more sustainable practices. For the Executive Chef, it’s liquid gold. The honey will be featured in the restaurants and the gift shop and guests will enjoy it at afternoon tea. The Fairmont Empress isn’t the first hotel on the island to welcome furry flying guests.
